  Western Swing Chronicles, Volume 1
Milton Brown and his Musical Brownies
1932-1936 (25 tracks)

Catalog Number: OJL 1000

Price: $16.00 (+ shipping)

Milton Brown combined black and white musical styles and brought them into country music some twenty years before Elvis Presley did the same thing. In one of his last reviews, the late Robert Palmer said: "It would be no exaggeration to call the Brownies one of the most important, and most unjustly obscure, of the predecessors and forefathers of rock and roll. At the time, there was nobody to compare him to; the figure I'm repeatedly reminded of when listening to Brown's impressive chops, natural feel, and inclusive stylistic grasp is Elvis Presley."

Leon Chappelear
Leon's Lone Star Cowboys

1932-1937 (27 tracks)

Catalog Number: OJL 1001

Price: $16.00 (+ shipping)

Leon Chappelear was one of the most promising bandleaders and songwriters in western swing's early years. Beginning as a Jimmie Rodgers inspired singing cowboy, Chappelear formed Leon's Lone Star Cowboys in 1934, a hot string band that became a sensation in Shreveport, Louisiana. But tragedy made Chappelear a footnote in western swing history. This is the first collection devoted to his pre-WWII recordings.

The Past Is Yet To Come
Craig Ventresco
(guitar solos)

Catalog Number: OJL 2000

Price: $16.00 (+ shipping)

Acoustic guitarist Craig Ventresco's style is a unique combination of ragtime, rural blues, early jazz guitar and traditional string band influences. His playing is at once fiery, melodic and inventive. Ventresco's tastes are unfettered by music in the modern era; he has instead concentrated on early 20th century vaudeville, ragtime, and popular songs as recorded on obscure 78s and cylinders from the dawn of recorded music. The CD includes music written by Eubie Blake, Scott Joplin, Big Bill Broonzy, James Scott, Lucky Roberts, and a Ventresco original as well. He learns most of his repertoire by ear, and his raucous yet sensitive playing style is a welcome alternative to the scholarly, delicate approach that usually characterizes ragtime guitar recordings.

  Out Of My Hands
Mark Spoelstra
(folk singer/songwriter)

Catalog Number: OJL 2001

Price: $16.00 (+ shipping)

In the 1960s, Mark Spoelstra was one of the original singer/songwriters of the vital folk music revival that thrived in urban centers such as Greenwich Village and Cambridge. His intricate, blues-influenced work on the six- and twelve-string guitar inspired many young guitar players and songwriters in that exciting time. He cites Mississippi John Hurt, Pete Seeger, Skip James, and especially Jesse Fuller as being his prime influences. He also credits Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry as key inspirations - in the early spring of 1961, Spoelstra chauffeured McGhee & Terry on a tour from Harlem to Chicago. Mark played all the folk festivals and coffee houses from coast to coast, including Gerde's Folk City (where he had a young duet partner named Bob Dylan), Newport, the Ash Grove, and the Bitter End. A master of the 12-string guitar, Spoelstra drew upon old country blues 78s for inspiration, yet has a innate talent for songwriting. He has recorded for Folkways, Elektra, and Columbia Records, but now is proud to be with Origin Jazz Library. "Out of My Hands" also features an original watercolor portrait by Eric Von Schmidt. This is Mark's first album in over 20 years.

Catalog Number: OJL-3000

Price: $16.00 (+ shipping)

Sol Hoopii's Novelty Quartette 1933-34. Sol Hoopii is considered to be one of the greatest of all Hawaiian steel guitar players. These recordings he made on acoustic steel guitar with his Novelty Quartette are the last before he switched to the electric guitar, and represent the pinnacle of his performing skill. This compilation includes many tracks which have never been reissued, with sound quality far superior to previous reissues of his music.
